Maureen O'Donnell is a hugely believable character as she struggles against all odds to reclaim herself. The Garnethill Trilogy is far and away one of the best trilogies in any genre. I wish Denise Mina would return to this heroine.
I can't gush about the novels in the Garnethill trilogy as the previous reviewer has without mentioning some sticking points I cannot forgive. Primarily, I found it extremely difficult to believe that the character of Maureen, with all of her foibles and faults, would realistically attempt all of the save-the-world moves she consistently engages in and around which all three books are centered. She is an engaging character and one who is well drawn but hardly up to the heroic altruism the author would have us believe. Albeit realistic, the protagonist Maureen is not believable as the woman who risks her life and those of her friends and family to thwart the trilogy's several villains (all of whom are male, by the way---an equally tiresome fault in the books), especially since the sins they've committed never directly involve Maureen herself. (Only one male character has damaged Maureen but the plots of the two first books skitter around that fact, leaving the problem unsolved until Resolution.) Mina should have stuck to the female cop protagonist she is so adept at using in her other novels. Finally, Mina is too heavy handed in the creation of Maureen; she is a stereotype cut from the whore-with-a-good-heart mold and, by the end of Resolution, I was thoroughly and completely sick of her.
For those of us in New Zealand who can never get enough of the tales of James Cook, this is another welcome addition.
It's only incidentally about the great English explorer of the Pacific, the main player being George Forster - scientist, botanist, natural history artist, wretched masturbator and foolhardy adherent to the pretensions of the French Revolution.
He and his father accompanied Cook as the Englishman's travelling chroniclers of animal, bird and plant life in the places visited on two of Cook's great voyages down under.
The chapters alternate between action accounts of some of the less well known exchanges Cook had with his shipmates during those gruelling trips, and travels into the tortured mind and life of Mr Forster Junior.
George and his father were their own worst enemies, with Vati exhibiting no self-awareness at all in his interactions with those on board the Resolution.
The pair alienated everyone in England when they published their account of the first voyage before Cook's came out.
The book is quite a difficult read because the author seems to have invented his own confusing style of introducing direct quotations.
There are also long passages devoted to young George's philosophical and marital anguishes, to the point where you find yourself skipping ahead to the next piece of action at sea.
None-the-less, the whole journey through the life of such interesting characters is easily undertaken.
This is the last of the Garnethill trilogy, and it's as great as the first two. I feel in love with all the jaded characters she created, and it is a tidy resolution to the story. I really enjoy hearing the Scots in her voice. It's nice to think of calling someone a "wee s***e".
You feel like you've gotten to know the characters
You've travelled to the setting
You don't want to stop reading the entire way through
You're sad it's over.
IMO this last was the best of the trilogy, but you must read all 3 to see how Maureen & the story evolves.
A terrific writer, with so much insight into characters. So many 'scenes' were as if I were there in the room, just great writing. However, after the first two books in this trilogy, I honestly was tired of the bad choices, gloominess, and smoking, drunkeness, ad naseum. I much admire the writing, but found I didn't like the character anymore.
Too often when you come to the solution of a mystery, you roll your eyes and say, "Oh, yeah. Right. Sure." Few writers can wrap it all up without taking a few hairpin turns that leave you gasping for credulity. Denise Mina occasionally engages in these twists and turns, but she writes so well, it's hard to fault her. The Garnethill Trilogy is especially good. I knew nothing about Glasgow and loved learning about the people who struggle on Garnethill. I'll forgive a great many plot glitches if the writing sings and her writing sings.
