The Perfect Wife Leisure Historical Romance Lynsay Sands 9780843954999 Books

how could Avelyn's parents be so ridiculously stupid at dealing with the cousins? I just don't get it. Why do they not reprimand those awful cousins? The parents are doting parents, so I cannot understand why is it they do nothing to stop them at ridicule their daughter. It just does not make any sense. Instead of doting their own children, they seem to permit the idiotic cousins to ridicule their daughter. In the scene, when they laugh at their daughter...all they did is nothing???? If I were a doting parent, the first thing I would do is punish them and stop them from laughing. That's just plain common sense and human reaction. While others in the room are sensible enough not to laugh out loud, why is there no one reprimanding those three nasty brats! I do like Paen for being such a nice guy throughout.

The Perfect Wife Leisure Historical Romance Lynsay Sands 9780843954999 Books Reviews

The first half of the book was about Avelyn and Paen making incorrect assumptions about each other. They were good-hearted yet simple-minded, naive people who made stupid mistakes resulting in calamities and injuries. Some readers might enjoy the humor of these situations, I did not. A few examples follow in Spoilers below, for readers to judge for themselves. The last part of the book was better. There was a subplot with some twists I had not expected. Someone was threatening someone else's life.

Story brief Avelyn and Paen were betrothed to each other when they were young, by their parents. Paen has been fighting in the Crusades for many years and just returned. He doesn't know much about women. He comes to Avelyn's family to marry her and take her to his home. Avelyn is plump. Her mean cousins have been making fun of her weight for years, causing Avelyn to be self conscious.

CAUTION SPOILERS (examples of the type of humor in the book)
Avelyn has her seamstress make the wedding dress too small as a motivation to lose weight. She asks the seamstress to keep this a secret. She doesn't lose the weight. She has nothing else to wear. On the wedding day, her mother binds her body with linen so Avelyn will fit into her dress. She can barely breathe. She can't walk and has to be carried to the altar. When kissed she faints from lack of air. At the wedding dinner, the bindings break and the dress seams split in front of everyone.

On her wedding night, Avelyn thinks Paen won't like her body so she tries to put out the candle while they are in bed. She accidentally knocks it over. It causes a fire. Paen tries to put out the fire using his clothes then his hands. The result is he has no clothes and his hands are bandaged for 2 weeks.

Because of the bandages, Paen avoids making love to his wife, because he thinks it won't be good for her. She thinks he doesn't want her because of her weight.

Paen's mother tells him he should compliment Avelyn more. Paen hands her an apple, slaps her rear and says "good." That's what he does to his horse to show affection.

Sexual language mild. Number of sex scenes five. Setting eleventh century (or later) England. Copyright 2005. Genre historical romance.

P.S. To C.B. Thank you for recommending this. I may not have liked it as much as you, but I'm grateful for your thoughts.

For a list of my reviews of other Lynsay Sands books, see my 5 star review of "Love is Blind" posted 1/22/07.
I have this story when it first came out. I loved it then and I loved it more now. It is about Avelyn believing she is big and very pretty and that she can't do anything. Paen sees what her cousins did to her by bullying her. Everyone's think she is clumsy. Avelyn is starting to think fate is against her. It was hard to put the story down even though I knew what was coming. It is a wonderful story and I hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
I love Lynsay Sands. Her humor is wonderful and her characters are always very human, flawed, not perfect, but loveable. Even the bad guys (or girls) are not one dimensional. I wish she would write more historical romances. I am really not into vampire stores, which she seems to prefer writing. Though I should note that her historical fiction is not for people obssessed with historical accuracy. She writes for people looking for a good story not wishing those wishing to attend a renactment fair
I could feel with the heroine, she feels bad in her body because of her stupid cousins and then she gets married and oh dear, everything goes wrong. Mishap after mishap, "accident" after "accident", but the heroine has already captured the heroes heart, they just have to realize it.
It's nie to see parents in a romance book and their advice to the newly weds.
I enjoyed this book, no great drama, but a lovely love story with lots of funny moments.
It was to be hoped that her groom was partial to cherries, for Avelyn feared she would very much resemble one at their wedding. Too round, too red in the scarlet gown that was all she could fit into... and perhaps too tart for his taste? No doubt he longed for a sweet, biddable bride, as tiny and trim as she was trying to appear. But Paen Gerville longed for a lively, well-rounded woman, one whose plump breast would cushion his head after the lonely, harsh life of a fighting knight. At first his wife-to-be promised no such delights - her form was too unbending, her health appeared fragile as she fainted into his arms after their first kiss. But one split bridal gown later, her assets were apparent...

THE PERFECT WIFE is the third book I've read by Lynsay Sands and although I loved the other two more, this was still a good story. I didn't find it quite as funny as the other ones (where I laughed so hard I cried) which is the reason for four stars instead of five. And while I really liked both Paen and Avelyn, neither one ever truly tugged at my heart. They were cute and absolutely made for each other, but didn't communicate well so needless to say there were multiple misunderstandings as a result. Poor Avelyn has many mishaps, and the story does have its serious moments when some of these occur. For the most part however, it was simply a very charming and fun story. A definite must read for any fan of Ms. Sands and perfect for anyone looking for a light-hearted historical romance that'll make you laugh out loud. An even better recommendation would be "Love Is Blind" which is my favorite by this author and one of the rare books I happily re-read =)
